Classification of alkyd resins based on oil length:

Oil length means the percentage of oil used in making the resin, which includes:

• Alkyd short oil (with 30 to 40% oil)
• Medium oil alkyd (with 40 to 50% oil)
• Long oil alkyd (with 50 to 60% oil)
  
  

 Long oil Alkyd resin:

• In this type of alkyd, the amount of oil is more than 55% by weight (up to a maximum of 75%) and 20% to 30% of phthalic anhydride.
• These alkyds dissolve well in aliphatic solvents such as white spirit.

• They have good engraving properties so that this type of alkyd is mainly used in construction oil paints.
